Human existence would not be possible without such things as water and air purification, nutrient cycling and the maintenance of biodiversity – nature provides these “ecosystem services” at no cost to the consumer. These predominantly public goods typically have no markets and no prices, so their gradual disappearance is not reflected in our current economic system. Various factors including population growth, changing diets, urbanization, and climate change are causing biodiversity to decline and ecosystems to be degraded. The world’s poor are most reliant on the degrading ecosystem services and thus are most at risk from the continuing loss of biodiversity

Africa is the second largest of Earth’s seven continents, covering 23 percent of the world’s total land area and containing 13 percent of the world’s population. Africa straddles the equator and most of its area lies within the tropics. It is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Indian Ocean and Red Sea on the east, and the Mediterranean Sea on the north. In the northeastern corner of the continent, Africa is connected with Asia by the Sinai Peninsula.

Africa is a land of great diversity. If you were to trek across the continent, you would pass through lush, green forests and wander vast, grassy plains. You would cross barren deserts, climb tall mountains, and ford some of the mightiest rivers on Earth. You would meet diverse people with a wide range of cultures and backgrounds and hear hundreds of different languages. You would pass through small villages where daily life remains largely the same as it has been for hundreds of years, as well as sprawling cities with skyscrapers, modern economies, and a mix of international cultural influences

Given the broad scope on the issue of climatic change and economic transformation and restructuring, there are many aspects and dimensions to greening the economy. According to the

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), “environmental protection

consists of activities to measure, prevent, limit, minimize, or correct environmental damage to water, air, and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise, and ecosystems. This includes activities, cleaner technologies, products, and services that reduce environmental risk and minimize pollution and resource use. There are many technologies, work processes, and products and services that reduce humanity’s environmental footprint, making the economy become more sustainable. Given the urgent nature

of the environmental crisis, however, these improvements must be very substantial. Marginal changes are inadequate to the task ahead—and may simply be over whelmed by a combination of environmental and ecological problems. Hence there is need for improved strategies to combat the ecological and environmental problems of the African region.

Afro Green Zone International has keen interest in  green economy initiative and continued environmental neglect in Africa due to lack of a powerful economic case for investing in the environment.  AGZI is poised to make that economic case towards restoring the environment of Africa our heritage to what it used to be the greenest and the most beautiful zones of the world..
